A Transformative Vision for Rewilding Captive Elephants in South Africa

BRING THE ELEPHANT HOME

Our goal is to establish a first-of-its-kind reserve to reintegrate and rewild elephants into their natural habitat in southern Africa. We aim to provide a transformative, long-term solution for elephants in captivity, encouraging the phasing out of elephants exploited in tourist entertainment by offering a life free from exploitation and a chance to flourish in their natural habitat. This endeavour will make South Africa the first country in Africa entirely free of captive elephants for human entertainment, a landmark step for elephant welfare globally.

The Problem:
Captive Elephants

Ninety captive elephants are currently in South Africa, but there is no sustainable plan for their ethical retirement, and their welfare is a pressing concern.

The Solution:
Elephant Rewilding Reserve

Rewilding is an ethical management strategy that offers a vision of freedom and dignity for captive elephants.

Community Engagement and Education

The Rewilding Reserve model is driven by a commitment to actively involve local communities and enhance educational opportunities.

Who We Are

We are a coalition of elephant specialists, scientists, and conservationists from the Elephant Reintegration Trust (ERT) and Bring The Elephant Home (BTEH). Collectively, we have decades of hands-on field experience. As a coalition, we collaborate to make informed decisions regarding the Rewilding Reserve based on scientific evidence and best practices in all areas of management and operations, conduct research, and actively engage with the scientific community and local stakeholders.
